The Signs And Symptoms Of Bipolar Disorder Bipolar disorder has been around for years, but unfortunately more and more people are beginning to suffer with it in modern society. It is defined as "a diagnostic category describing a class of mood disorders where the person experiences states or episodes of depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states."
Perhaps you have heard to bipolar disorder referred to before as manic depression. They are one and the same thing. Mood swings and an inability to function normally are the two main symptoms. The highs are extremely high, but the lows reach a level that a normal person cannot. They can be unbelievably happy one minute and then become depressed and irritable the next. The condition is treatable but extremely serious. Bipolar disorder does take its toll on the sufferer’s life. It can permanently damage relationships, lead to being fired from a series of jobs or being expelled from school, and, in some cases, lead to suicide. Sufferers rarely get a good night’s sleep, which tends to make symptoms worse. Other symptoms include unrealistic beliefs in ability, denial that anything is wrong, an inability to judge situations accurately, an increased sex drive and spending sprees. However, quite often it can lead to a dependency on alcohol and drugs, whether the latter is prescription or illegal. Anybody can suffer from bipolar disorder, from the very old to the very young. Age and class have no bearing. If you notice that someone has been acting strangely for a while, or has been displaying any of the symptoms, it may be worth convincing them to consult a doctor. Bipolar disorder is not curable. Once you have it you have it, but that is not to say that it cannot be treated effectively. Any treatment is long term because of the nature of the disorder and may include keeping a record of sleeping patterns, mood swings and irrational behaviour. Modern medicine offers medication and counselling services to help sufferers overcome the disorder to the point where they can begin to lead a normal life. |
